The long winter days always have me yearning for beautiful flowers. Rather than picking up fresh flowers from the store, try planting some of your own to enjoy for weeks ahead.
Forcing bulbs indoors is the easiest way to enjoy the color and fragrance of spring when it's still months away.
Some of the more popular bulbs to grow indoors include:
For amaryllis and paperwhites, a tall vase or water tight container will suffice layered with pebbles or small glass stones about 2/3 full. Place the bulbs root side down, fill the container with water to the base of the bulbs and watch them grow. Within a few weeks you will enjoy the wonderful blooms. Maintain the same water levels throughout. Adding a little aquarium charcoal will ensure clean water.
Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and crocus require a little more work and time. A chilling peiod will need to occur once planted in potting mix or pebbles root side down. Check out this article from Gardener's Supply Company to learn more on the prep and care for these beauties.
Another option is to place individual bulbs in small vase or water carafe with water.
